Concept visual for new macaque enclosure

I am working on some designs for new enclosures in a small zoo somewhere on the Mediterranean coast of Europe.

The enclosure pictured in the image below will house long tailed macaques but will also be useful for other monkey species. The three separate compartments all have tunnels (like small cave entrances) in the artificial rock. These tunnels lead into a satellite room which is an indoor area with a glass viewing window. Also there is a pool with a waterfall which macaques love. The zoo mesh is held up by long poles, the central ones disguised as gnarly old trees complete with hidey holes to put food items in.

I hope to give more updates on this project soon.

Avonturia Caves

It’s a good thing to visit past projects and see them through different eyes. I worked on this artificial cave project with Houthoff Zoo Design last summer. It is at Avonturia in The Netherlands and is part of a unique project which combines a mini zoo and an adventure playground.

I went back there with my young daughter and watched as she excitedly ran ahead but hesitated at each dark corner. The caves have a real spooky feel about them with lots of shadowy nooks and the people at Avonturia have made good use of lighting to create these affects. The ambient music fits perfectly and the whole atmosphere is one of excitement and suspense.
